For the Chipmunk in My Yard

I think he knows I’m alive, having come down
The three steps of the back porch
And given me a good once over. All afternoon
He’s been moving back and forth,
Gathering odd bits of walnut shells and twigs,
While all about him the great fields tumble
To the blades of the thresher. He’s lucky
To be where he is, wild with all that happens.
He’s lucky he’s not one of the shadows
Living in the blond heart of the wheat.
This autumn when trees bolt, dark with the fires
Of starlight, he’ll curl among their roots,
Wanting nothing but the slow burn of matter
On which he fastens like a small, brown flame.

{s'mores were made for summer}

the rites of summer
find shelter in a sacred alcove of my heart
when the battering ram of winter comes to call
i will tuck them in, a bit mournfully however,
impatiently tending to them in their dormancy
with the fervent hope that they will someday
shed their embedded comfort
in favor of heeding the urgent summons
of a burgeoning Spring

Haley is a new friend of mine and a gifted painter of self-portraits.
I have been longing to explore some different ideas I've had swirling in my brain
for quite some time now and she was the perfect subject for that very thing.

The diptych below is oddly reminiscent of her self-portrait collection.
Check it out here and see why for yourself.

Thank you for sharing an afternoon of artistic exploration with me, Haley.
It gave my creative spirits a much needed lift and renewed
my love for this crazy little obsession called photography.
I owe ya one!

Dear Greg,
Remember when I said you really should consider modeling?
And remember when you laughed uncontrollably at the very thought of it?
Oh yeah, and you accused me of saying that just to get you to smile?!
Well, Greg, all I can say is that the images speak for themselves.
Woah. ;-)
Happy Senior Year!!!

Nina.Class.of.2011 - fort collins senior portrait photography

I love senior portraits. A lot.
If I could do them all year round, I would.
That's how much I love them.
Just sayin'.

For this session, we spent a gorgeous Fall morning on Nina's
aunt and uncle's property nestled at the base of the Colorado foothills.
She has spent a lot of time there over the years and
it's not hard to see why it's near and dear to her heart.
I got to hang out in this beautiful place with some
really sweet and fun high schoolers (Greg's session up next!),
making pictures with the warm Autumn sun at my back.
Needless to say, I loved every last minute of it.

lily's.big.moment

Today was a BIG day for Lily.

The Deal: She had to do the dishes every day for a month's time,
if she wanted to get her ears pierced a few months earlier than her tenth birthday.
This, of course, was the age set for her older sister, but somehow a deal was cut when
the Great Negotiator (a.k.a. little Lily Lou Who) decided it was Priority No. 1 on her life agenda.
When this girlie sets her mind to something, get.out.of.the.way because she will put all of
her muscle and might behind it. You know that saying about dynamite coming in small packages??
Yeah, that would be her.

I must say that Tim and I are quite relieved that she reached her goal because,
let's just say, that her dishwashing skills leave a little bit to be desired.
Three cheers for Lily's achievement, her sassy new earrings & the fact that we will now have
dishes to eat and drink from that will once again pass a much closer inspection!!

Lily got to share the experience with two of her bestest buddies: Chloe & Caroline.
Chloe also got her ears pierced at the same time while Caroline provided moral support.
My favorite part of the whole thing?? Seeing the three of them encourage and support
one another through the process. Worth it's weight in gold.

The all-important selection process:
{They both settled on sweet and tiny little zirconia stars.}

Chloe The Brave goes first:
{Success!!}

I LOVE this next series of images because you can
really see the FULL spectrum of emotion.
{You can't tell she's our resident drama queen, can you??}

Admiring her new sassy self in the mirror:

Aaaand, just in case you're not completely overwhelmed
with images {never!} and wanted some sound effects
to go with all of the above:

CONGRATS Lily & Chloe!!!

{Lulu and her beach burn - Sunset Beach, CA 2010}

As the night air makes that subtle, but unmistakable,
downshift into Fall, I am mourning the loss of yet another summer.
Truth is, I never want summer to leave and I'd carry it
with me everywhere I go if I could. Since that's not possible,
my images of summer's warmth will have to sustain me until next year.
It's a tall order so wish me luck. Happy Labor Day, I think?!

This sweet family's session resulted in one of my all-time favorite images
which made an already lovely evening with them
that much lovelier.

Hope you enjoy the images as much as I do!
